Commercial Drones

Commercial drones are great vehicles for remote sensing. They are inexpensive and can cover a small area at high resolution in a short time. Their limitations include short flight duration and limited payload weight.

Low cost is a major advantage of drones. Toy drones with 1080p or 4k cameras can be purchased for under $100. Depending on the altitude, they can give image resolution as fine as 2 cm. It is also important that they can be launched almost anywhere at any time.

Consumer drones have significant limitations for commercial use. They are battery-powered, so their flight time is typically measured in minutes. This leads to a modest areal coverage for each mission. If the payload is more than a simple camera, weight can become a significant concern. Another issue can arise if you want to perform a task that goes beyond the abilities of the standard camera. Adding custom capabilities will likely force you to upgrade to a commercial drone.

What Cameras are Available for Drones?

Drones are available with a range of camera resolutions, from 1080p for toy drones through 64 MP for the Skydio X10. The most widely used resolution is 4k, but 16-20 MP and 48 MP are available as options from DJI and Skydio. If the highest possible resolution is your goal, Phase One (https://www.phaseone.com/solutions/geospatial-solutions/components/) advertises cameras with 100 – 150 MP cameras that will set you back $50k.
